mVm in the classroom

A teacher’s aid for acting, voice, public speaking and communication classes!

Q: Does mVm recommend a specific text resource for acting, voice, or communication classes?

A: Yes! The mVm Presence Training.

In the same way you may include Freeing the Natural Voice by Kristin Linklater, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, The Actor and the Target by Declan Donnellan, The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle, An Actor Prepares by Konstantin Stanislavski, or The Art of Public Speaking by Dale Carnegie as required reading for your University classroom, we recommend the mVm Presence Training.

About mVm Miller Voice Method

This is a technique developed in the best acting and communications programs in the world and privately coached to a wide range of professionals from over fifty different countries. It is quickly being incorporated into classrooms at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Below are some commonly asked questions about how to do that.

FAQs

Q: What is the mVm Presence Training?

A: An online course that uses video and text to guide the viewer through the process of discovering habits that limit communication and provides clear-cut exercises to mitigate those habits.

  1. Curated workouts you can return to again and again

  2. Explanatory videos for each exercise so you can hop right into full workout routines

  3. Access to the full Video Library, allowing you to do any exercise at any time

Q: Why an online course?

A: Videos with supporting text are better than a book for working on voice & presence.

Students can see the physical modeling, hear the sounds of the teacher and students, and read the associated text. We have a ton of supportive text explaining the whys and hows of each exercise alongside the videos themselves. This creates a tool that's more effective than a simple textbook, and more accessible to various types of learners.

Q: How will students in my course use this material?

A: Primarily as homework.

  • Practice Partner - The videos have been used as a way for students to have a "practice partner" at home. Having the videos is a way to motivate them and increase quality control when they're on their own trying to remember what happened in class.

  • Journals - Requiring journal entries based on their at-home practice becomes an accountability system and another diverse way for certain learners to process the work.

Q: How do I integrate the videos into my class?

A: Start a conversation & get more out of class.

  • Dialogue Inspiration - We suggest encouraging questions in-class about their at-home experience. Invariably they bring up points that need clarity which then segues beautifully into some embodied moments together.

  • Increase Class Time Flexibility - Now that they have a way to practice certain exercises at home, it frees space up in class so you can focus more on integration, scene work, and advanced notes on their craft.

Q: How do I frame this in my syllabus?

A: You have options, depending on your situation.

If you’d like to make the Presence Training a core resource for your syllabus, you can…

  1. Set your students up with the University edition (more details below).

  2. List the Presence Training under the "Recommended Readings / Resources" section of your syllabus and strongly encourage students to go check it out.

Q: What if I have no experience with this work? How can I support student questions that come up?

A: Let us help!

  • A 45-minute support call to assess your class curriculum and recommend syllabus placement.

  • An introductory virtual class on the Miller Voice Method with a Certified mVm Teacher to get your class started.

  • A check-in virtual meeting for your class to ask questions and share their experiences with a Certified mVm Teacher.

What Teachers Say

Cost

  • Your department can pay $65 per student + $225 admin for 6 months of student access.

  • If you don't want to charge your students for any resources, we recommend the 7-day trial version of the videos. This will allow them to hit it hard for a week at no expense.
